Selecting a good pet store is key to keeping healthy fish . Choosing the right pet shop: A pet store that can give you accurate information about caring for your fish tank and a fish shop that will sell you happy, healthy fish with the correct information to care for those fish will save you a number of headaches down the road. finding a good pet shop - and then patronizing that shop - means that you have a go-to source for emergency equipment or supplements, should the need arise, as well as a good source for your day-to-day needs for aquarium equipment, supplies, and fish.

Many of the characteristics of a good pet shop are the same you would expect from any business: it should be clean, the employees should be clean and groomed, and you should be greeted when you arrive.

Some characteristics of a good pet shop are unique to the pet industry: all the animals in the pet shop (or pet department) should be in clean cages of reasonably appropriate size, the animals should all have a source of water, reptiles should be kept to a minimum due to their sensitivity to stress and their special care needs, and there should not be any dye-injected fish or other animals that have obviously been tortured.
